Imphal: The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body representing the Kuki community in Manipur, has asked all Kuki-Zo legislators to stay away from the upcoming state Assembly session beginning September 2.
The six-day session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly is scheduled to continue until September 7, with three sittings planned during the period.
In a statement, the KIM instructed Kuki-Zo MLAs not to travel to Imphal to attend the eighth session of the Assembly. It warned that legislators who disregard the directive could be viewed as acting against the community’s collective political position.
The apex body reiterated its demand for a separate political administration for the Kuki-Zo people, arguing that normal legislative proceedings should not resume while the political crisis in the state remains unresolved.
According to the KIM, participation in the Assembly session could give the impression that normalcy has returned to Manipur and potentially dilute the demand for a political settlement. It urged the legislators to demonstrate political responsibility and remain aligned with the aspirations of the community.
The body also questioned the continuation of regular Assembly proceedings amid the ongoing crisis, maintaining that legislative business should not be treated as normal under the prevailing circumstances.
The directive represents the position of the Kuki apex body, while the individual decisions of the legislators regarding attendance remain unclear.
The Kuki-Zo community currently has nine legislators in the 60-member Manipur Assembly. Among them is Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, along with six other BJP MLAs.
