Guwahati: Gunfire was reported near Wakotphai village along the IT Road corridor in Manipurโ€™s hill district on Thursday morning after armed men allegedly opened fire near agricultural fields, according to local sources.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 9:20 am near Naibet, where farmers had been staying in temporary field huts to guard their paddy crops.

According to the sources, the gunfire broke out while the farmers were inside the makeshift shelters. The attack prompted local Kuki-Zo village volunteers to respond, leading to an exchange of fire.

The farmers were reportedly moved away from the area as the security situation deteriorated.

Local sources alleged that the attackers were cadres of the NSCN-IM. The allegation could not be independently verified.

Details regarding possible casualties, injuries or damage remained unclear as reports from the area continued to emerge.
