Guwahati: The Meghalaya High Court has taken note of the lack of further arrests in connection with the violence reported on August 19, observing that only office-bearers of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) have so far been arrested.
A division bench comprising Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh was informed about the cases registered over incidents of vandalism and assault. The court observed that while the investigation appeared to be underway, no additional arrests had been made apart from those of the KSU office bearers.
Advocate General A. Kumar informed the court that the state government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct an expedited investigation into the incidents.
The state government also submitted a status report along with details of the cases registered in connection with the vandalism and assault.
The court noted that two High Court vehicles carrying officers were attacked during the violence. A personal security officer (PSO) and a driver were also assaulted, it observed.
The bench directed the state to produce the case diaries relating to those incidents and called for faster investigation in all the cases, including the attack on a public transport bus.
The matter has been listed for hearing on September 1, when the state is expected to submit an updated status report and produce the relevant case diaries.
