Agartala: Heavy rainfall triggered flooding in several parts of Tripura on Sunday, damaging 115 houses and forcing 974 people from 280 families to move into 11 relief camps, according to the State Emergency Operation Centreโs daily situation report.
Of the affected houses, 113 suffered partial damage while two were severely damaged. No houses were reported completely destroyed. The report also recorded no deaths or injuries and said there was no reported damage to electricity poles or school buildings.
Jirania, Sadar, Teliamura and Khowai were among the areas affected by the flooding.
In Jirania, 34 people from 25 families were accommodated in two relief camps. Sadar had five camps sheltering 87 families, with a total of 330 people taking refuge there.
Teliamura reported one severely damaged house following flooding on August 23. A relief camp at Jagannath Bari SB School was accommodating 51 people from 17 families.
Khowai recorded the highest number of damaged houses, with 91 partially damaged and one severely damaged. Three relief camps were opened in the area, providing shelter to 559 people from 151 families.
In Mohanpur, 22 houses were partially damaged following heavy rain on August 22. The report said financial assistance for the affected households was being processed.
Several rivers also recorded water levels close to or above their designated thresholds. At 2.30 pm, the Howrah river at Jahar Bridge in Agartala stood at 11.06 metres, matching the critical level mentioned in the report.
The Khowai river at Khowai recorded 23.85 metres at 12.30 pm against an expected flood level of 24 metres. The Bijoy river at Laxmibill in Bishalgarh stood at 12.55 metres at 11.30 am, compared with an expected flood level of 13.865 metres.
Several parts of the state recorded substantial rainfall. Lembuchhera received 218 mm, followed by Budhjongnagar with 177 mm and Agartala Airport with 153 mm. Teliamura recorded 129 mm, Tulashikhar 124.6 mm and Secretariat 101.5 mm.
The weather outlook accompanying the report warned that light to moderate rain and thundershowers were likely at many places across Tripura over the following 24 hours.
Isolated heavy rain of 7 to 11 cm was also forecast in North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, Khowai, West Tripura and Gomati districts. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning were expected at isolated locations across the state.
