Imphal: The Manipur government has ordered the closure of all schools, colleges and universities across the state from August 20 to 22, 2026, citing the prevailing law and order situation.
The directive, issued on August 19 by Education Department Commissioner-cum-Secretary Ningthoujam Geoffrey under the authority of the Governor of Manipur, covers all educational institutions across the state.
The closure applies to government, aided and unaided institutions, including schools affiliated with the Board of Secondary Education Manipur, Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur, Central Board of Secondary Education and other boards. Colleges, higher education institutions and universities have also been included in the order.
The government cited the volatile security situation as the reason for the three-day closure, amid renewed civil unrest and protests in the state.
The decision comes as the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) begins a non-cooperation movement targeting state and central government offices in Manipur from August 20.
The campaign follows a 48-hour general strike over demands for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census enumeration process.
The latest shutdown is expected to affect academic activities across the state as tensions remain high over the NRC and Census-related demands.
