Imphal: The death toll from Friday morning’s suspected militant attack at Langka Naga village in Kangpokpi district rose to two, with two injured persons airlifted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.
The Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur (LNC-M) declared an emergency shutdown in response, while the Tangkhul Naga Long condemned the violence and demanded action.
The deceased were identified as Wiriliangbou Chawang, 35, and Kawidinang Abonmai, 54. The injured, identified as Maliangjinang Abonmai, 50, and Namthiulungbou Prinmai, 45, were airlifted by the Indian Army from Haochong to RIMS at around 5:30 pm for further medical treatment, official sources said.
The LNC-M declared an emergency total shutdown across all Liangmai Naga-inhabited areas in response to the killings and injuries. The LNC-M stated that two Naga village volunteers were killed and several others injured in an alleged attack by KNF-P cadres at around 7:30 am.
The shutdown will continue until further notice. Shops, offices and institutions remain closed, while medical, fire and emergency services are exempted. The LNC-M urged the public to keep the shutdown peaceful and called on authorities to protect civilians and bring the culprits to justice.
According to the Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL-WC), the attack involved about 50 cadres allegedly led by Kuki National Front (KNF) leader Jangboi Kipgen and members of the Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA).
The TNL-WC condemned the violence as part of a targeted campaign against Naga villages, noting that houses in Kailenjang were burned on August 10.
The Tangkhul body questioned the continued presence of armed groups operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the Government of India.
The TNL-WC demanded immediate intervention by the state and Centre to ensure civilian safety and offered condolences to the bereaved families.
