Imphal: The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), Churachandpur, on Thursday sealed the office of the Deputy General Manager (DGM) of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) after the expiry of a three-day ultimatum over delays in critical culvert construction and drainage works at Hmar Veng and Tuibong.
The organisation has demanded a clear timeline for completing the pending works, which it said have contributed to severe monsoon flooding and created dangerous conditions for motorists and pedestrians.
In a letter to the authorities, the KSO said that despite holding a meeting with the DGM several months ago, no concrete steps were taken to address the issues. Recent heavy rainfall has again led to severe flooding at both locations, rendering the road difficult or impossible to pass.
The organisation also raised concerns over the slow progress of drainage work along Tiddim Road, while accumulated debris has further reduced the usable width of the road and increased the risk of accidents.
According to the KSO, two youths travelling on a two-wheeler in 2026 fell into an open drain near the KSO Complex during heavy rain at night. They were swept away before being rescued.
The organisation further said a cyclist was recently nearly swept away at the same spot during daylight, highlighting the continuing danger posed by the open drain.
Questioning the lack of urgent action, the KSO asked whether authorities were waiting for a major tragedy to occur before taking corrective measures.
The student body warned that failure to address the pending works within a clear timeframe would compel it to launch further actions without any prior notice.
