North Lakhimpur: Tension continued along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh inter-state boundary in Ming Mang near Gogamukh on Tuesday, a day after a firing incident left 11 persons injured.
A fresh confrontation was reported after an armed man from the Arunachal Pradesh side allegedly entered the area and threatened local villagers.
The situation became tense when the man, carrying a gun, entered the Ming Mang area near the Ayang River bridge and allegedly threatened to open fire at local residents. However, a group of local youths reportedly overpowered him following a scuffle and forced him to leave the area.
The incident came amid heightened tension following Monday’s firing, in which 11 persons were injured in what local residents described as unprovoked firing from the Arunachal Pradesh side.
The situation had already become tense earlier in the day when locals detained two persons from Arunachal Pradesh at the Ming Mang market. The duo was subsequently handed over to Gogamukh Police for further questioning.
Meanwhile, several villagers from Ming Mang staged a demonstration at Bogee Pung, around 500 metres from the site of Monday’s firing, demanding immediate action against those responsible for the incident.
The protesters agreed to disperse after police assured them that the perpetrators would be apprehended within 48 hours.
The series of incidents has heightened concerns among residents living along the sensitive inter-state boundary, with the local population demanding effective measures to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of villagers.
