Guwahati: Floodwaters from the rising Dhansiri River have affected several parts of Assam’s Bokakhat sub-division, with families in inundated areas moving to relief camps as the region faces a second wave of flooding.
Assam Cabinet Minister and Bokakhat MLA Atul Bora visited the affected areas on Sunday to take stock of the situation and meet residents displaced by the floods.
Bora visited Kuruwabahi, Chinakan and Nagenapar, where rising water levels have affected several families. He also inspected relief camps and interacted with people who had been forced to leave their homes.
The minister directed officials to ensure adequate supplies of food, drinking water and other essential items for the affected population. He also called for arrangements to protect and care for livestock in flood-hit areas.
Bora said relief and assistance measures were being carried out on priority in four Upper Assam districts following directions from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.A detailed assessment of flood-related damage also began across the four districts on Sunday. In Bokakhat, the sub-divisional administration started the survey from Ward No. 1 of Kuruwabahi Gaon Panchayat in the presence of Bora.
The assessment will cover damage to residential houses, agricultural land, crops and other properties affected by the flooding.
Bora said the government would look into possible assistance for farmers whose sali paddy crops have been damaged. He added that the matter would be discussed with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma before deciding on further measures.
Educational institutions affected by the floods will also be surveyed. The minister said the government would assess the damage to schools and colleges and take necessary steps for compensation and restoration.
During the visit, residents of greater Kuruwabahi raised several concerns with the minister, including a shortage of drinking water in the flood-affected areas.
Following their request, authorities made immediate arrangements to address the drinking water shortage.
With the latest flooding affecting more areas of Bokakhat, the administration is continuing relief operations while assessing damage and working to maintain essential services for displaced families and livestock.
