Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited Kangpokpi district headquarters on August 8, 2026, following an invitation from Kuki civil society organisations, amid protests by Naga and Meitei villagers along NH-2.
The visit included the inauguration of healthcare and welfare facilities and interactions with local residents and officials.
En route, the Chief Minister was received by Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, a Kuki leader, and local residents in Gamgiphai and Damdei villages. During the visit, the Chief Minister inaugurated a new District Dialysis Unit and a District Blood Storage Facility.
He also visited the Multipurpose Hall at the Autonomous District Council (ADC) Office, where he flagged off solid waste management vehicles and distributed plastic collection banks to five villages.
The CM also oversaw the distribution of direct benefit transfers (DBT), material assistance and support incentives to local beneficiaries and internally displaced persons.
He expressed his gratitude to the people of Gamgiphai and Damdei along NH-2 for their welcome during the visit, which was accompanied by MLAs and senior officers.
The CM said listening to people and understanding their concerns was central to responsive governance and assured residents that their grievances would receive consideration. “Peace is the foundation of development,” he said, adding, “I remain committed to strengthening peacebuilding efforts and working together for a peaceful, inclusive and progressive Manipur.”
However, on his way to Kangpokpi, hundreds of villagers from Naga and Meitei communities waved black flags along National Highway-2 at Makhan village. They were protesting what they described as delays in justice for six slain Naga civilians.
A planned stop by the Chief Minister to visit internally displaced persons (IDPs) at Makhan was called off after local residents expressed unwillingness to host the interaction.
After his visit, the Chief Minister took to his Facebook page and wrote, “I was pleased to inaugurate the Dialysis Unit at CHC Kangpokpi and the District Blood Storage Facility at District Hospital, Kangpokpi, besides handing over an ambulance to strengthen healthcare delivery in the district.
“These facilities will provide vital dialysis and blood services and ensure safer, timely transportation of patients, bringing essential healthcare closer to the people. The government remains committed to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and ensuring accessible, quality and people-centric healthcare for all.”
