Guwahati: Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed, and another was injured after an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) allegedly opened fire inside the 34 Battalion CRPF camp at Katimari in Assam’s Nagaon district on Tuesday morning before allegedly taking his own life, officials said.
According to preliminary information, ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, a native of Andhra Pradesh, was deployed on main gate duty when he was reportedly found without his assigned service weapon. He subsequently allegedly took an INSAS rifle from the camp’s guard room and moved towards the rear side of the Quarter Guard.
Police said Premabaram allegedly first shot Head Constable (HV/GD) Vishnu Prasad Baghel, who later succumbed to his injuries. He then allegedly opened fire on SI/GD Ramnawal Singh Yadav, who had arrived at the camp for document verification. Yadav also died at the scene.
The accused allegedly went on to shoot ASI/Mane Govind Sripul of the 171 Battalion, leaving him seriously injured.
After the shooting, Premabaram reportedly entered the barracks of the 171 Battalion and allegedly shot himself. He died on the spot.
The injured ASI was rushed to Dew Care Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
The deceased have been identified as SI/GD Ramnawal Singh Yadav, Head Constable Vishnu Prasad Baghel, and ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, the alleged shooter.
The motive behind the incident remains unclear. Police and CRPF authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the firing inside the camp.
