Kangpokpi athletes honoured
Manipur Deputy CM Nemcha Kipgen honours four Kangpokpi athletes, praising sports as a symbol of hope and nation-building.

Imphal: Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen on Saturday said young athletes are symbols of hope, resilience and national pride, describing sports as a powerful force for nation-building, while felicitating four outstanding sportspersons from conflict-affected Kangpokpi district.

Speaking at a felicitation ceremony organised by the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) Sadar Hills at El-Shaddai in Kangpokpi Town, Kipgen said the achievements of the young athletes offer inspiration to a generation growing up amid the ethnic conflict that has affected the state since May 2023.

Kangpokpi district has remained one of the worst-affected areas in the ongoing crisis, witnessing recurring ethnic tensions, highway blockades and security challenges.

The athletes honoured included footballers Thangsanglen Kipgen, Lalvanghao Haokip and Seiminsang Khongsai, along with badminton player Kimkim Khongsai.

The three footballers, who are members of Minerva Academy FC, played a key role in helping the club win the Under-12 titles at the Gothia Cup and the Helsinki Cup.

Kimkim Khongsai was recognised for winning the gold medal at the All India Under-15 National Badminton Championship held in Hyderabad earlier this year.

Each of the four athletes received a cash award of Rs 50,000 and a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of their achievements.

Addressing the gathering, Kipgen urged the young sportspersons to continue serving the nation with discipline, dedication and humility. She said true patriotism is reflected through excellence that enhances India’s reputation on the global stage.

She stressed that nation-building begins with strong values at home and is strengthened through education, discipline and sports. According to her, the success of these young athletes sends a message of hope to children living in relief camps and conflict-affected villages, demonstrating that determination can overcome adversity.

The event, fully sponsored by the KSO Sadar Hills, celebrated local youth who have excelled in sports at the national and international levels. Community leaders, students, and residents attended the programme, applauding the athletes for bringing recognition to both Kangpokpi district and the country.
