Guwahati: Residents of flood-affected Sivasagar and Charaideo will not have to pay land revenue (mati khajana) for one year after the Assam government announced the concession on Saturday as part of its flood rehabilitation measures.
Speaking during a Facebook Live session on Saturday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the land revenue exemption would take effect from April 1, 2026.
Sivasagar and Charaideo were among the worst-affected districts during the recent floods, with thousands of houses, farmlands and public infrastructure damaged, while many families were displaced.
The Chief Minister also announced relief on electricity bills. Households in Sivasagar and Charaideo that consumed up to 300 units of electricity in July will receive a full waiver of their power bill for the month, with the cost to be borne by the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Consumers using prepaid smart meters will receive a government recharge of up to 300 units, while those whose consumption exceeded the limit will have to pay the remaining charges.
Sarma also said the government is working with insurance companies to help flood-affected residents of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat receive their insurance settlements at the earliest.
He said insurance companies would adopt a simplified claims process with reduced documentation requirements and a streamlined application procedure to help eligible families receive compensation more quickly.
