Guwahati: Assam will begin the self-enumeration phase of Census 2027 from August 2, allowing residents to submit their details online for the first time as part of a technology-driven population enumeration exercise. However, the process will not start immediately in two flood-affected districts of Upper Assam due to the prevailing flood situation.
The announcement was made on Saturday by the Directorate of Census Operations during a press conference at Janata Bhawan, where Director of Census Operations Biswajit Pegu outlined the roadmap for the Census and the preparations completed so far.
Pegu said the Census will be conducted in two phases. The first phase, self-enumeration, will run from August 2 to August 16, enabling residents to submit their information through the official Census self-enumeration portal or on their smartphones.
The second phase, the Housing Census, will be conducted from August 17 to September 15. During this stage, enumerators will visit households to collect information on housing conditions, household assets, and access to basic amenities.
Officials said the digital self-enumeration platform will be available in 16 languages, including Assamese, making it easier for people across the state to participate in the exercise.
Addressing concerns over data security, Pegu assured that all information collected during the Census would remain strictly confidential. He said the data would be securely stored at the National Data Centre and would not be shared with any individual or agency.
The Census will cover all 35 districts of Assam, including 166 sub-districts and 26,236 villages. As part of the preparations, the Directorate has already completed the training of 59 Master Trainers, who will oversee the implementation of the exercise across the state.
According to officials, the Census questionnaire will include 33 questions covering demographic and household-related information. These include details such as the type of house, number of family members, identity of the head of the household, number of married persons, source of drinking water, availability of a kitchen, LPG or PNG connections, and other basic household facilities.
The Directorate said the introduction of self-enumeration marks a major step towards making the Census process more accessible and efficient through the use of digital technology.
