Doomdooma: Assamese graffiti artist Neelim Mahanta has created a mural in Demow, Sivasagar, calling on the Centre to declare the ongoing flood situation in Upper Assam a national disaster.
The mural has drawn widespread attention on social media and renewed discussion on the impact of Assam’s recurring floods and the demand for stronger government intervention.
Sharing the artwork on social media, Mahanta wrote: “How many more tears? How much more suffering? How many more dead bodies? How many more ruins must we witness before their neglect comes to an end? Modi ji, Assam will remember this neglect. We demand that the present flood situation in Upper Assam be declared a National Disaster. We want action, not your silence.”
The mural depicts a caricature of Prime Minister Narendra Modi holding a cup labelled “Assam Flood”, alongside the message “Declare it National Disaster.”
Mahanta said the artwork was created to amplify the voices of flood-affected people in Upper Assam and press for the ongoing flood situation to be declared a national disaster.
He said the mural aims to draw attention to what he described as the need for greater support and intervention for communities affected by repeated floods.
The artwork has generated discussion on social media, with supporters and critics debating Assam’s flood management, disaster response and the role of public art in raising humanitarian issues.
The mural has also renewed attention on the impact of recurring floods in Assam.
