The moratorium will take effect from July 19, 2026, and will apply to borrowers whose loan accounts were classified as standard accounts and not as non-performing assets (NPAs)

Guwahati: The Assam government has announced a six-month moratorium on loan repayments for flood-affected borrowers in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat and Jorhat districts, covering housing, education, vehicle, farm and self-help group (SHG) loans.

The moratorium will take effect from July 19, 2026, and will apply to borrowers whose loan accounts were classified as standard accounts and not as non-performing assets (NPAs).

During the six-month period, eligible borrowers will not be required to pay their regular loan instalments.

The state government said borrowers will also be allowed to extend their loan repayment tenure by six months to one year after the moratorium, subject to individual requirements and applicable banking norms.

The relief package includes housing, education and vehicle loans, as well as farm loans, crop loans and loans availed by self-help groups in the four flood-hit districts.

The measure is intended to provide financial relief to families, farmers and businesses affected by the recent floods, which caused widespread damage to homes, agriculture and livelihoods across Upper Assam.
