Imphal: Heavy rainfall on Thursday afternoon triggered flash flooding and severe waterlogging across Manipur’s Churachandpur district, leaving thousands stranded and disrupting traffic, business and daily life.
The downpour started at around 4 pm and continued for more than an hour, causing local streams to overflow and inundating roads, residential areas and commercial establishments.
Low-lying areas and neighbourhoods along rivulets were among the worst affected as floodwaters submerged major thoroughfares and brought vehicular movement to a standstill.
The worst-hit localities included Lower Mission Veng, Zeliang, D. Phailian, Compound Veng, Lailam Veng and New Lamka, where floodwaters entered residential compounds and inundated ground-floor rooms.
Several families living near vulnerable water channels were forced to evacuate after floodwaters entered their homes.
Residents reported damage to household belongings, food stocks and other valuables, while markets and commercial activities remained suspended during the flooding.
Local residents attributed the recurring flooding to inadequate drainage infrastructure, alleging that even a few hours of heavy rainfall now overwhelm streams and drainage channels.
Officials said no injuries or fatalities had been reported.
District authorities and emergency personnel have begun preliminary damage assessment and are assisting affected residents in relief operations.
