Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has fined a resident Rs 10,000 for illegally piling construction materials on a public street in the city’s Roopnagar locality, highlighting a widespread civic nuisance affecting neighborhoods across Guwahati.
The fine was issued to Dr. S. M. Bhagawaty after GMC officials discovered heaps of sand, bricks, and stone aggregates dumped outside his residence. The material had spilled over onto the roadside, encroaching on public space and blocking access for both vehicular traffic and pedestrians. GMC authorities released photos showing the blocked street alongside the official penalty receipt.
This enforcement action highlights a growing problem across the city, where homeowners and property developers frequently use public roads as makeshift storage yards for building supplies. Sand piles, bricks, and gravel often occupy large sections of active roadways, significantly narrowing streets, slowing down traffic, endangering pedestrians, and creating serious safety risks, especially on tight residential lanes.
By cracking down on these violations, the GMC aims to deter residents from appropriating public property and ensure streets remain open, safe, and easily accessible for commuters and emergency responders.
