Aizawl: Senior leaders and workers of the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) staged a brief protest near Raj Bhavan in Aizawl on Tuesday, condemning the detention of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders during a protest over the NEET paper leak issue and police crackdown on protesting students in New Delhi.
The protesters later submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through Governor Vijay Kumar Singh before dispersing peacefully, party leaders said.
MPCC spokesperson Lalremruata Renthlei said the protest was organised to express solidarity with Rahul Gandhi and his campaign for protecting the rights and interests of students.
According to Renthlei, the demonstration lasted only a few minutes and concluded after the memorandum was handed over to the Governor for onward transmission to the Prime Minister.
Police said no untoward incident was reported during the protest.
In its memorandum, the Congress demanded the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over repeated alleged NEET paper leaks.
The party also blamed the Prime Minister and the NDA government for allegedly failing to safeguard the rights and interests of students across the country.
The memorandum further sought a full discussion in Parliament on examination irregularities and the Centre’s handling of the issue. It also demanded the immediate withdrawal of all FIRs registered against students following the protest in Delhi on Monday.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other Opposition leaders were detained during a protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi on Tuesday over the alleged paper leak issue and police crackdown against students. They were released later at night.
