Guwahati: The Assam government has unveiled Mission Senehjori, a key initiative under the Assam Budget 2026, to strengthen the state’s Muga silk sector by converting discarded silk waste into high-value spun yarn. The programme aims to reduce wastage, improve resource utilisation and generate new employment opportunities.
Sharing details of the initiative on X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said nearly 40 per cent of Muga silk cocoons currently go unused due to the absence of proper processing facilities. Mission Senehjori is designed to address this gap by creating infrastructure to process the waste into commercially valuable spun yarn.
The government believes the initiative will boost the economic potential of Assam’s traditional silk industry while making production more sustainable. By adding value to material that is otherwise discarded, the mission is expected to enhance incomes for those associated with the Muga silk sector and support the industry’s long-term growth.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Sarma said Muga silk remains a symbol of Assam’s identity, but a large portion of its cocoons is lost as waste. He said the Budget 2026 has earmarked investments under Mission Senehjori to establish the required infrastructure, enabling the production of high-value spun yarn, creating jobs and reinforcing the state’s renowned Muga silk ecosystem.
