Agartala: The Tripura government has intensified efforts to address human-elephant conflict in Khowai district by setting up five anti-depredation camps, launching a 24-hour helpline and constructing protective trenches in vulnerable areas.
Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma announced the initiatives on Saturday while inaugurating the state-level 77th Van Mahotsav celebrations at Chitrangada Kala Kendra in Teliamura. He also virtually inaugurated the newly established anti-depredation camps at Maiganga, North Krishnapur, Chakmaghat, Ghilatali and East Laxmipur under Teliamura subdivision.
The minister said the Forest Department has strengthened its response mechanism to elephant movement to reduce crop damage, property loss and risks to human life. As part of the mitigation measures, nearly 9 km of trenches have been dug to prevent elephants from entering villages, while the newly introduced helpline will provide round-the-clock assistance to residents in affected areas.
Emphasising the importance of forests, Debbarma said they are vital for maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance. He urged people to focus not only on planting trees but also on ensuring the survival and growth of saplings.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, the minister said the initiative has encouraged widespread plantation drives across the country. He added that around 20 lakh saplings were planted across Tripura last year.
Debbarma also highlighted the Forest Department’s ongoing conservation and livelihood initiatives being implemented under the Integrated Green Development Programme (IGDP) and projects supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Chief Whip and Teliamura MLA Kalyani Saha Roy called on citizens to make tree plantation a mass movement, while Principal Chief Conservator of Forests R.K. Samal delivered the welcome address.
During the programme, revolving fund assistance was provided to five self-help groups from Mungiakami. The department also honoured Joint Forest Management Committees, organisations and individuals for their contribution to forest conservation. Winners of the state-level biodiversity photography competition were felicitated during the event.
As part of the Van Mahotsav celebrations, the Forest Department distributed free saplings and organised an exhibition with 16 stalls showcasing its conservation initiatives and sustainable livelihood programmes.
