Aizawl: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday underscored the media’s critical role in combating misinformation and ensuring the dissemination of accurate election-related information during the All India Media Conference held in New Delhi.
The conference brought together journalists and election officials from across the country to discuss key aspects of election management, the poll panel’s recent initiatives, and the media’s responsibility in strengthening democratic processes through factual and credible reporting.
Seven journalists from Mizoram participated in the conference, accompanied by Joint Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Mizoram Ethel Rothangpuii and SIR Media In-charge and Information and Public Relations Deputy Director Lalnunmawii.
Addressing the conference, ECI Director General (Media) Ashish Goyal highlighted the Commission’s close partnership with the media in conducting elections, saying journalists play a vital role in ensuring that the public receives accurate and trustworthy information.
He stressed that the poll panel and the media must work together to counter misinformation, noting that conducting elections in the world’s largest democracy is a complex exercise that requires effective collaboration between election authorities and the press.
Director General (IT) Dr Seema Khanna showcased the Commission’s use of digital technology to improve public access to election-related information.
She encouraged media organisations to make greater use of the ECINET platform, which provides comprehensive information on polling arrangements and other election services across all states.
The conference also featured discussions on the Election Commission’s recent initiatives, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and other significant electoral issues.
The programme aimed to strengthen journalists’ understanding of the Commission’s initiatives and future priorities, enabling them to communicate election-related information to the public more effectively.
