Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms at isolated places in Guwahati and adjoining areas over the next two to three days.
The forecast follows the IMD’s heavy rainfall warning issued on July 10. According to the weather department, Guwahati and nearby areas are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall of 6โ12 cm in 24 hours, along with thunderstorms and lightning.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said the weather conditions could lead to waterlogging, flooding, flash floods, slow vehicular movement and an increased risk of landslides in vulnerable areas.
District authorities and ASDMA said they are monitoring the situation, and emergency response systems have been kept on alert.
ASDMA has advised residents of Guwahati to remain cautious and take necessary precautions. Daily commuters and long-distance travellers have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
Residents living in low-lying and hillside areas have also been advised to remain alert for signs of flooding and landslides.
The authority has also requested local authorities to allow employees to leave for their homes early in view of the weather forecast.
ASDMA said it will continue to issue weather updates through its official website and social media platforms and urged the public to follow official advisories and weather bulletins.
