Imphal: Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Sunday said grassroots sporting events play a crucial role in identifying and nurturing young talent while addressing the closing ceremony of the inaugural Bishnupur District Olympic Games at Chengei Lampak in Moirang.
The multi-disciplinary event, organised by the Bishnupur District Administration in collaboration with the Bishnupur District Olympic Association, concluded with a grand ceremony celebrating athletic excellence and youth participation. The games featured competitions in 16 disciplines, providing a platform for budding athletes while promoting the values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.
Congratulating the organisers and participants, Governor Bhalla lauded the successful conduct of the inaugural edition and stressed that district-level competitions are essential for discovering future champions.
He noted that Thoubal was the first district in Manipur to introduce the District Olympic Games model and expressed hope that similar events would soon be organised across every district of the state, ensuring that promising athletes receive opportunities to showcase their abilities.
The Governor also praised Bishnupurโs rich sporting tradition and acknowledged the achievements of athletes from the district. He said initiatives such as Fit India, Khelo India, and the National Sports University are playing a significant role in strengthening the stateโs sports ecosystem and creating pathways for young talent.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh also addressed the gathering, describing the District Olympic Games as an important platform for emerging athletes.
He said competitions at the district level encourage healthy rivalry, help athletes improve their skills, and prepare them to compete successfully at national and international levels.
The closing ceremony featured colourful cultural performances, the final matches of the games, and a band display by the Indian Army, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Among those present were Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, local MLAs, Chief Secretary Dr Puneet Kumar Goel, and other senior officials. The event concluded with the presentation of trophies, medals, and mementoes to winners across the various sporting disciplines.
