Guwahati: Assam plans to recruit 33,240 healthcare personnel and expand its medical education network under a wide-ranging health package announced in the 2026-27 State Budget, alongside a proposal to post an MBBS doctor at every Health Sub-Centre across the state.
While presenting the Budget in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said the government also intends to open four new medical colleges in Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai and Bajali.
If the proposal is implemented, Assam’s network of medical colleges will increase to 28. The state currently has 14 operational institutions, while 10 others are being built at different stages.
According to Baruah, the expansion is part of the government’s long-term objective of establishing a medical college in every district so that both medical education and specialised healthcare become more accessible across Assam.
The Budget also outlines a major strengthening of primary healthcare by ensuring that every Health Sub-Centre is staffed with an MBBS doctor, supported by the required strength of Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) personnel.
Describing the proposal as unprecedented, the Finance Minister said no other state has introduced such a model for Health Sub-Centres. To support these reforms, the government will create 33,240 posts across health institutions.
The recruitment plan covers 6,814 MBBS doctors, 82 AYUSH doctors, 22 Dental Surgeons, 10,942 Staff Nurses, 4,669 Pharmacists, 4,669 Laboratory Technicians, 67 Radiographers, 1,283 ANMs, 4,625 Lower Division Assistants/Accountants and 67 Dressers.
Baruah said the large-scale appointments are intended to strengthen healthcare services across the system, from village-level facilities to higher medical institutions.
