Brahmaputra erosion
Fresh Brahmaputra erosion in Tingkhong threatens homes, farmland, prompting urgent calls for permanent riverbank protection measures

Dibrugarh: Fresh riverbank erosion along the Brahmaputra has raised serious concerns in the Mohanaghat area near Tingkhong Bhoga Ali, with residents fearing extensive land loss and potential damage to nearby homes and infrastructure.

The erosion, driven by the river’s strong currents, has worsened over the past few days, triggering anxiety among families residing close to the embankment. Villagers fear that if the erosion continues unchecked, vast tracts of agricultural land and residential areas could be swallowed by the river.

Following reports of the incident, officials from the district administration visited the affected site to assess the situation and evaluate the extent of the damage. The authorities have also initiated immediate preventive measures to curb further erosion and protect vulnerable locations.

Residents of Aithan village said they have been living under the persistent threat of erosion for years, as the Brahmaputra continues to edge closer to their settlement.

“We are living in constant fear because the Brahmaputra’s erosion has become a major threat to our lives. The government has undertaken protection work using geo-bags, but we are uncertain about how effective these measures will be in stopping the erosion,” said local resident Dev Chouhan.

He added that the river has been gradually advancing towards the village over the years and cautioned that without timely and effective intervention, the entire locality could face severe destruction.

The latest incident has once again underscored the recurring challenge of riverbank erosion across Upper Assam, where numerous villages remain highly vulnerable during the monsoon season. Local residents have urged the government to implement long-term and sustainable erosion-control measures to safeguard lives, livelihoods, agricultural land, and critical infrastructure.
