Imphal: A major landslide triggered by incessant rainfall disrupted traffic movement along the Imphal-Silchar National Highway (NH-37) in Manipur‘s Tamenglong district on Wednesday morning, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded and severing a key road link.
According to officials, the landslide occurred between Shanti Khunou and Rengpang near the 87 CRPF Battalion camp, where a large stretch of the highway was covered by rocks, mud and debris, bringing vehicular movement to a complete halt.
The blockage has stranded hundreds of vehicles, including private cars and goods carriers. Most of the affected vehicles comprise trucks transporting essential commodities from Silchar to Imphal through Jiribam, as well as vehicles travelling in the opposite direction towards Jiribam. No casualties or injuries have been reported.
Prior to the incident, authorities had facilitated the movement of 392 vehicles carrying essential supplies along NH-37. Security forces have continued to maintain strict convoy protection and surveillance on vulnerable stretches of the highway to ensure the safe movement of traffic.
Restoration work is currently underway, with personnel from Ganpati Construction Company, responsible for the maintenance and blacktopping of the Imphal-Jiribam road section, engaged in clearing the accumulated debris and reopening the route.
Meanwhile, officials have urged commuters to avoid non-essential travel and rely on official updates regarding road conditions. “All possible efforts are being made to clear the obstruction and assist stranded travelers. Restoration operations are in progress,” a district official said.
