Agartala: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has sought a report from the Director General of Police (DGP) after receiving a complaint from the Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress (TPYC) alleging misconduct and the use of excessive force by CRPF personnel during a protest in Agartala earlier this week.

The complaint was submitted to the commission by a TPYC delegation led by state president Neel Kamal Saha.

The petition relates to a protest march held on June 15, which moved through different parts of the city before reaching RMS Chowmuhani, where security barricades had been placed.

According to the complaint, security personnel intervened when protesters approached the barricaded area.

The Youth Congress alleged that CRPF personnel, led by an officer identified as Ram Kumar, used force against demonstrators, resulting in injuries to several activists.

The organisation further claimed that women participants were also subjected to misconduct during the incident. It alleged that the actions of the CRPF personnel were carried out independently and without instructions from the senior police officers present at the spot.

Along with the complaint, the delegation submitted photographs purportedly showing injured activists and identifying the officer named in the allegations.

Video footage related to the incident was also presented before the commission, with the complainants agreeing to provide copies for examination.

After considering the petition and supporting materials, the commission, headed by Justice Arindam Lodh, decided to take cognisance of the matter and ordered a detailed inquiry.

In its order, the THRC directed that the complaint be forwarded to the DGP for investigation and the submission of a comprehensive report.

The commission also instructed its investigation wing to preserve and monitor any video evidence submitted in connection with the case.

The matter is scheduled to come up again before the commission on July 14, when the inquiry report is expected to be reviewed.

Meanwhile, Youth Congress leaders reiterated their demand for action against the officer named in the complaint.

TPYC president Neel Kamal Saha alleged that the conduct of the personnel during the protest was unacceptable and called for an impartial investigation into the incident.
