Guwahati : A Senior Section Engineer (SSE) of the Carriage and Wagon Department of the Northeast Frontier Railway in Silchar was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on June 14 in connection with an alleged bribery case.
The arrest followed a complaint from a contractor who claimed that the railway official had sought an illegal payment in exchange for facilitating the release of a pending bill valued at around Rs 20 lakh for work that had already been completed.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI registered a case on June 13 and launched a trap operation. During the operation, the engineer was allegedly caught while accepting Rs 20,000 from the contractor. Investigators stated that the amount represented one per cent of the outstanding bill and was allegedly demanded as a prerequisite for processing the payment.
According to the agency, the official had insisted on receiving a percentage of the bill amount before taking steps to clear the contractorโs dues.
After being taken into custody, the accused was to be produced before the appropriate court in Guwahati. As part of the probe, CBI teams also carried out searches at the engineerโs residence to gather further evidence.
The agency has said that investigations are continuing and additional inquiries are being conducted to determine the full extent of the matter.
