Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet, in a meeting held on Saturday at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Dispur under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved two major policy measures focused on urban expansion and administrative regulation.

A key decision taken by the Cabinet was the approval for the creation of the Guwahati Satellite Cities Development Authority (GSCDA). The new body will be responsible for planning and overseeing the development of satellite townships around Guwahati, which has been experiencing significant urban pressure due to rapid population growth and expanding infrastructure needs.

Officials said the authority will work towards structured urban expansion outside the core city limits, aiming to ease congestion in Guwahati while promoting the development of new residential hubs, infrastructure networks, and urban services in surrounding regions. The initiative is expected to support long-term planning and ensure more balanced regional growth in the greater Guwahati area.

In a separate decision, the Cabinet also approved a revision in the deputation rules for senior government officers. Under the new provisions, members of the All India Services, including IAS officers, will now require prior approval from the Cabinet before being issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for deputation to Central or other state governments.

The revised policy is intended to bring greater scrutiny and control over the transfer and deployment of senior bureaucrats, with the aim of strengthening administrative oversight across departments.

Both decisions are expected to play a significant role in shaping governance practices and urban development strategies in Assam in the coming years.
