Guwahati: A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck near Punakha in Bhutan on Sunday night, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), sending tremors across Assam and parts of Northeast India.
The quake occurred at 11:10 p.m. (IST), jolting residents in Guwahati and triggering brief panic in several areas as people rushed outdoors.
Tremors were also felt in neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal and China.
Residents in multiple localities of Guwahati reported noticeable shaking, with similar reports emerging from other parts of Assam and the wider Northeast region.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage in Assam or elsewhere in the region.
