Guwahati: Domestic cooking gas prices have been raised again, with the cost of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder increasing by Rs 29 effective June 7. The revision marks the second hike in domestic LPG rates within three months, driven largely by sustained pressure from global energy markets.
With the latest change, the price of a standard cylinder in Delhi has moved from Rs 913 to Rs 942, according to industry sources. Officials attributed the hike to continued volatility in international fuel prices, which has been influenced by geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions in key energy producing regions.
Earlier, LPG rates were increased by Rs 60 on March 7 after unrest in West Asia disrupted supply chains and pushed global energy costs higher. That revision, however, was not sufficient to fully offset the financial strain faced by state owned oil marketing companies on subsidized domestic LPG sales.
Industry estimates suggest that, prior to the latest adjustment, public sector fuel retailers were incurring losses of approximately Rs 703 per LPG cylinder sold in the domestic segment.
The price revision comes alongside a broader upward trend in transport fuel costs. Since mid-May, petrol and diesel prices have increased cumulatively by around Rs 7.50 per litre, while compressed natural gas (CNG) rates have risen by nearly Rs 6 per kilogram.
Despite these increases, oil marketing companies are still reportedly selling petrol and diesel below procurement cost. Loss estimates indicate a shortfall of about Rs 11 per litre on petrol and Rs 33.6 per litre on diesel.
Officials have indicated that the government has opted against fully passing on international price pressures to consumers, with state-run fuel retailers absorbing part of the burden as global crude and refined product markets remain unstable.
