Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on Friday admitted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) related to Assamโ€™s State debt and overall fiscal situation under the Himanta Biswa Sarma government.

The matter has now been brought under judicial consideration.

Senior Advocate Kamal Nayan Chowdhary presented arguments in the case, referring to concerns over borrowing levels, off-budget liabilities and pending financial obligations.

He also cited findings of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

At the initial hearing, the Chief Justice expressed caution on the scope of relief that could be granted. However, the Bench observed that the issue was โ€œreal and concerning.โ€

The Court admitted the PIL and directed the State Government to file its response.

The matter has been listed for hearing on September 16, 2026.

The petition raises concerns regarding the Stateโ€™s debt levels and fiscal management and seeks judicial examination of the matter.

The people of Assam now await further proceedings in the case.
