Guwahati: A major illegal betting operation linked to the Indian Premier League (IPL) was exposed by Guwahati Police during a late-night raid conducted on the day of the tournament’s final match. The operation led to the recovery of cash, valuable ornaments, electronic gadgets, luxury cars and documents related to multiple properties.

Speaking to reporters, Guwahati‘s Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), Shambhavi Mishra, said the action was the result of a detailed intelligence-based investigation. A dedicated team comprising senior officers, including the Additional DCP, the ACP of Noonmati subdivision and other police personnel, carried out the operation.

The raid targeted the residence of Alok Jain, who has been identified as the main suspect in the case. According to investigators, betting activities were allegedly being conducted from the location while the IPL final was in progress.

Police officials stated that Jain had been under surveillance for suspected involvement in unlawful gambling activities. During the search, law enforcement personnel recovered numerous electronic devices, including 16 smartphones, two laptops, computer monitors and tablets that were allegedly used for managing betting transactions and monitoring live match coverage.

Authorities also confiscated approximately Rs 80,000 in cash along with a significant collection of jewellery. Several high-end vehicles parked at the premises were taken into custody, while documents relating to around 26 properties located in different parts of Guwahati were also seized.

Investigators are currently analysing the recovered materials to assess the scale of the betting network and identify any financial connections associated with the operation. The property papers and other assets are expected to play a crucial role in determining the extent of the alleged illegal activities.

Police said the investigation remains active, and further legal proceedings, including additional arrests, could be initiated depending on the findings emerging from the evidence collected during the raid.
