Guwahati: National People’s Party (NPP) president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has called for the immediate and unconditional release of civilians reportedly being held captive amid the continuing ethnic tensions in Manipur.
In separate letters addressed to the leaders of Kuki Inpi Manipur and the United Naga Council, Sangma voiced concern over reports that six Naga men and fourteen Kuki civilians have remained in captivity since May 13 and 14.
Highlighting the humanitarian impact of the situation, Sangma said the continued detention of civilians has caused immense distress to affected families, leaving many living in anxiety and uncertainty. He noted that such incidents risk widening divisions among communities that have shared longstanding social and cultural ties.
Urging all parties to act with compassion, the NPP leader appealed for the safe release of those being held and stressed the importance of ensuring their well-being, including access to food, medical assistance and communication with their families until they return home.
Sangma maintained that lasting solutions to Manipur’s challenges must be achieved through dialogue and mutual understanding rather than violence or coercion. He also emphasised the need to create an environment where young people from all communities can pursue education, security and opportunities for a better future.
Reiterating the NPP’s commitment to peace and human dignity, Sangma expressed support for a transparent and dignified release process and called on all stakeholders to prioritise reconciliation and harmony in the interest of restoring lasting peace in the state.
