Guwahati: A retired Assam Police Service (APS) officer, Girin Chandra Deka, passed away on Sunday, May 24, after allegedly being assaulted in Guwahatiโ€™s Ghoramara locality, officials confirmed.

Reports suggest the violence stemmed from a minor parking disagreement, during which a youth identified as Sanjit Boro is said to have attacked the former officer.

He suffered severe injuries in the incident and was subsequently shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

He later died despite medical treatment.

Police have arrested one individual in connection with the case.

The accused, Sanjit Boro, was taken into custody from Jorhat during a search operation.

Authorities also confirmed that a post-mortem will be conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on Monday, May 25.

The incident has sparked concern in Guwahati over increasing instances of street violence and vigilante behaviour, while investigation is ongoing.
