Guwahati: Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex body representing the Kuki tribes in Manipur, has announced a further 48 hour extension of the ongoing total shutdown in Kuki-Zo inhabited areas, which will take effect from midnight on May 23.

In a statement released from Kangpokpi on Friday, the organisation said the decision was made to protect the โ€œrights, dignity and futureโ€ of the Kuki Zo community.

According to the announcement, all educational institutions, commercial establishments and regular vehicular movement will remain closed during the shutdown period.

However, essential services have been exempted from the restrictions. These include emergency medical services, pharmacies, media operations, water supply, electricity-related services and other humanitarian necessities.

KIM also urged the concerned authorities and the Government of India to take urgent measures to restore peace, deliver justice, and address the difficulties faced by people amid the ongoing crisis.

The extension of the shutdown comes against the backdrop of continued tensions and law and order challenges in Manipur, where different communities and civil society organisations have been voicing concerns related to security, justice and the return of normalcy.

The statement was issued by Janghaolun Haokip, Secretary of Information and Publicity, Kuki Inpi Manipur.
