Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Friday outlined the BJP-led government’s vision for the next five years during his maiden address to the 16th Assam Assembly, amid a walkout by Opposition legislators over issues including inflation.
The disruption began within minutes of the Governor’s address on the second day of the Assembly session, as Congress and Raijor Dal MLAs entered the Well of the House demanding that the government address what they described as core public issues instead of focusing on its achievements.
Congress legislators displayed placards and raised slogans before walking out of the Assembly.
The two Raijor Dal MLAs, led by Akhil Gogoi, initially remained in the House and continued raising their objections during the Governor’s speech. They later walked out after submitting a written note containing their points.
In his address, Governor Acharya said the BJP-led NDA government’s return to power for a third consecutive term reflected public support for its governance model.
“This mandate reflects the people’s endorsement of peace, economic stability and inclusive development pursued over the past ten years,” he said, while also claiming that the government had achieved “substantial and historic” progress in restoring peace in the state.
The Governor also appealed to citizens to exercise restraint in discretionary spending in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for austerity.
He further welcomed the government’s decision to introduce legislation related to the Uniform Civil Code during the current Assembly session, stating that it would promote social harmony, justice, gender equality and a progressive society.
