Aizawl: Government employees in Mizoram covered under the National Pension System (NPS) will observe a mass casual leave on June 8 to press for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), the Mizoram Movement for Old Pension Scheme (MIMOPS) announced on Thursday.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the organisation held on Wednesday, a MIMOPS leader said.

In a statement, the organisation said the state government had failed to make any encouraging progress on its long-pending demands, forcing employees to intensify their protest despite their reluctance to confront the authorities.

MIMOPS urged all members to extend full support to the agitation, warning that a lack of unity could weaken the movement in the future.

“We urgently need solidarity from all members. If full support is not received now, it may become increasingly difficult to continue the movement effectively,” the organisation said.

The body also criticised the state government for not implementing the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), stating that the Central Government had already rolled it out from April 1 last year.

According to MIMOPS, several states including Assam, Maharashtra, Tripura and Manipur have already offered the UPS to employees despite not constituting study committees on the issue.
