North Lakhimpur: Eminent freedom fighter, noted educationist, and one of the most revered senior citizens of Lakhimpur district, Madan Bhuyan, passed away on Wednesday at Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh, following a brief illness. He was 101.

Born in 1925 in Charaidoloni in Narayanpur, Lakhimpur district, Bhuyan took part in Indiaโ€™s freedom movement from a very young age. He was imprisoned during the historic Quit India Movement in 1942 for his active participation in the struggle against British rule.

After Independence, Bhuyan dedicated his life to education and social service. He joined Picholaguri ME School as one of its founder teachers and later retired as the headmaster of the institution, earning immense respect as a teacher and mentor in the region.

Bhuyan was closely associated with the Assam State Freedom Fighters Association and served as a member of its advisory board. In recognition of his contribution to the nation, the Assam government felicitated him in 2021 during the 75th anniversary celebrations of Indiaโ€™s Independence under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Despite his advanced age, Bhuyan remained active in patriotic and social activities and unfurled the National Flag during Republic Day celebrations on January 26 this year.

In a final act of generosity, Bhuyan donated his vital organs to Assam Medical College and Hospital before his mortal remains were brought to his native Narayanpur.

The Lakhimpur district administration, led by District Commissioner Aditya Vikram Yadav, paid floral tributes to the departed freedom fighter at his residence.

Bhuyan is survived by three sons and three daughters. His wife and one son predeceased him.

His demise has been widely mourned across Lakhimpur district, with people from all walks of life remembering him as a patriot, educator, and guiding elder whose life was devoted to the service of the nation and society.
