Dimapur: In a move to provide affordable homes with sanitation and other basic essential services, the Nagaland government has opened a rental housing complex for the urban poor at Chumoukedima.

Nagaland Adviser to the Urban Development & Municipal Affairs Department, Zhaleo Rio, inaugurated the complex on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Rio said the project was undertaken to provide affordable and dignified accommodation along with essential services for economically weaker sections, migrant workers, and low-income groups.

He stated that the housing facility would be allotted not only to indigenous inhabitants but also to all Indian citizens residing in Chumoukedima district, including migrant workers. However, he clarified that it would not be provided to illegal immigrants.

Rio said the complex comprises 384 units of 1BHK apartments. He further said the initial rent had been fixed at Rs 1,000 for a period of three years, adding that any revision of rent would be undertaken by the Chumoukedima Town Council (CTC) with approval from the state government.

On the occasion, Rio also flagged off sanitation vehicles for the district.

He stressed the need for proper waste management and sanitation practices.

He called for strict compliance with rules and regulations and urged the public to cooperate in maintaining cleanliness by ensuring segregation and proper disposal of waste.

Commissioner & Secretary of the Municipal Affairs Department, Kekhrievor Kevichusa, described the inauguration of the project as a proud moment for both the department and the state government.

He said that although the project was not a large-budget initiative, its social impact on Chumoukedima and the surrounding areas would be significant, adding that the department has partnered with the CTC for management of the facility.
