Guwahati: Researchers have recorded the first-ever camera-trap image of a rare musk deer inside Yordi Rabe Supse Wildlife Sanctuary, marking a major milestone in biodiversity documentation in the eastern Himalayan region.
According to forest department officials in West Siang district, the elusive animal was photographed recently through a camera trap installed deep inside the sanctuaryโs dense forest landscape.
The sanctuary is known for its rugged mountainous terrain, rich vegetation and diverse wildlife habitats.
Wildlife experts described the sighting as highly significant, noting that musk deer are nocturnal, extremely shy and rarely seen in the wild because of their elusive nature and preference for remote high-altitude forests.
Experts said the presence of musk deer is considered a key indicator of a healthy and relatively undisturbed Himalayan ecosystem.
The development has been welcomed by conservationists and researchers, who said the discovery underlines the ecological importance of the sanctuary and the need for continued conservation efforts in Arunachal Pradesh.
