Guwahati: The Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj released the National Panchayat Awards 2025, and panchayats from the Northeast performed excellently. Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, and Sikkim received national recognition in multiple categories.
This year’s awards, which honour excellence in rural government, sustainable development, sanitation, infrastructure, and grassroots leadership, have chosen 42 panchayats from 17 States and Union Territories. The award ceremony is set for June 3 in New Delhi.
Assam won three national awards, making it one of the region’s top performers. The Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar 2025 awarded New Napam Gaon Panchayat a prize of Rs 1.5 crore for being the nation’s Best Gram Panchayat.
Jumarmur Gaon Panchayat won second place in the Clean and Green Panchayat category under the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar 2025, and Hoogrijan Gaon Panchayat won second place in the Self-Sufficient Infrastructure category, which is another significant honour for the state.
Tripura also left a lasting mark, as Sepahijala won the top prize of Rs 5 crore and was crowned the nation’s Best District Panchayat. In the thematic awards, Baikunthapur was honoured in the Women-Friendly Panchayat category while Kanchanbari won first place in the Healthy Panchayat category.
Gyalshing Omchung from Sikkim placed third in the Poverty-Free and Enhanced Livelihoods category, while Kawrthah North in Mizoram took first place in the Clean and Green Panchayat category.
According to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, the awards are intended to honour and reward panchayats for their outstanding work in community-led development, sustainability, local government, and service delivery under the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan.
The North Eastern states’ impressive results in this year’s awards have been regarded as a major boost to the region’s efforts at rural development and grassroots government.
