On 24 April 2026, the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology celebrated the launch of major infrastructure upgrades designed to improve both campus life and the academic setting. Once the inauguration events concluded, the Institute hosted a press briefing at 5:00 PM inside the Directorโs Conference Hall (2nd Floor, Administration Building). The meeting served to showcase the Instituteโs persistent efforts to bolster its academic framework and campus amenities via strategic growth. Leading the discussion was the Honourable Director, Prof. Harish Hirani, joined by Dean (Student Affairs), Dr. Koushik Guha Biswas; Head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Prof. Amit Ranjan; and Assistant Dean (Research & Development), Dr. Ankur Pandey.
Throughout the briefing, Prof. Harish Hirani described the Instituteโs strategy for balancing high-level academics with comprehensive student growth. He highlighted RGIPTโs commitment to nurturing innovation and hands-on skills, backed by a strong pre-incubation structure. Students are currently tackling real-world problems via the Design and Innovation Centre (DIC). This program has already yielded concrete results, such as a mobile app for night canteen services, an online grievance redressal system for hostel and mess management, a digital campus entryโexit system, and ERP-based platforms built to optimize academic processes. Such projects demonstrate significant student involvement and the Instituteโs push to foster an entrepreneurial and innovative mindset.
Prof. Hirani further announced that, starting this academic year, admissions to the B.Tech programme will be based exclusively on JEE Advanced. This policy change underscores the Instituteโs commitment to maintaining strict academic benchmarks and drawing in top-tier students. When discussing the unique aspects of the RGIPT curriculum, he noted its emphasis on real-life problem solving, early-stage internships from the first year, structured summer training programmes, and project-based learning.
He also noted that the Senate has lately reviewed a proposal to introduce merit-based tuition fee waivers aimed at recognizing academic success. According to the proposed structure, students securing a rank up to 1000 in JEE Advanced would be entitled to a 100% tuition fee waiver. Candidates ranked between 1001 and 2500 would qualify for a 75% waiver, whereas those ranked between 2501 and 5000 would be awarded a 50% waiver, and students with ranks between 5001 and 8000 would receive a 30% waiver.
The Director also shared updates on the key infrastructure projects launched throughout the day. These improvements feature the renovated Directorโs Corridor, which was updated to boost administrative efficiency and privacy. Furthermore, new centralized spaces for the Departments of Energy and Human Sciences and Mathematical Sciences were unveiled to support better faculty coordination, engagement, and research collaboration. The foundation stone for a swimming pool was also laid, underscoring the Instituteโs commitment to physical health and overall development. To further enhance student life and wellness, a food court and fresh recreational facilities, including box cricket and box football, were opened in the hostel area.
Dr. Koushik Guha Biswas, Dean (Student Affairs), stressed the importance of engagement, discipline, and comprehensive growth regarding student welfare. He remarked that these newly opened facilities are anticipated to significantly enhance the general campus experience.
The occasion saw eager participation from faculty, staff, students, and members of the media, highlighting the Instituteโs swift progress toward becoming a modern, student-focused, and innovation-led institution.
