Dimapur: BJP candidate Daochier I. Imchen on Monday emerged victorious in the by-election to the 28 Koridang (ST) Assembly constituency in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district, defeating his nearest rival, Independent candidate Maj (retd) Toshikaba, by a margin of 3,123 votes.
Imchen polled 7,317 votes, while Toshikaba secured 4,194 votes.
After the declaration of the result, Imchen received the certificate of election from Mokokchung Returning Officer Nockpai Konyak at the Mokokchung DC office.
Altogether, six candidates were in the fray.
Independent candidate Imliwapang secured 3,633 votes, National People’s Party candidate I. Abenjang polled 3,219 votes, Independent candidate Imchatoba Imchen received 147 votes, and Congress candidate T. Chalukumba Ao polled 144 votes.
A total of 22,506 electors were registered in the constituency, and 18,745 votes were cast in the election.
The election also recorded 48 NOTA votes and 43 rejected votes, reflecting a voter turnout of over 82.21%.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of sitting BJP MLA Imkong L. Imchen in November last year.
Polling was conducted on April 9.
