Guwahati: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has announced that it will observe ‘Separation Day’ on May 3 in Kangpokpi, describing the occasion as a tribute to those who lost their lives while defending their land and communities amid the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur.

As part of the observance, CoTU has called for a complete shutdown along National Highway-2 from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on the day. The organisation stated that all business establishments, schools, private organisations, and government offices will remain closed during this period.

However, exemptions have been made for medical emergencies and funeral processions.

The group has also urged restrictions on travel, farming, and routine activities for members of the Kuki-Zo community throughout the day as part of the collective observance.

A main programme is scheduled at 12 noon at Martyrs’ Cemetery in Phajang. Leaders from the Kuki-Zo Council, Kuki Inpi Manipur, Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills, along with church leaders, tribal bodies, student organisations, women’s groups, and other civil society representatives are expected to participate.

CoTU has appealed to the public for cooperation and solidarity in observing the day.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of ongoing tensions in Manipur, where ethnic violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities since 2023, along with recent clashes involving Kuki-Zo groups and Tangkhul Nagas, has led to prolonged unrest, displacement and political uncertainty.
