Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced a series of welfare initiatives on International Workersโ Day, Friday, May 1, aimed at improving the lives of construction workers and recognising their contribution to the stateโs development.
The initiatives were launched to mark the occasion and focus on social security, skill development, education, and digital access for workers and their families.
Under the CM LIGHT scheme, eligible workers will receive Rs 5,000 as direct financial assistance. The government also introduced the Startup Toolkit Support Scheme to help skilled workers become self-employed by providing necessary tools.
To improve educational opportunities, the ENABLE initiative will offer reserved seats and full fee waivers for workersโ children in educational institutions. The BUILD programme will focus on strengthening community infrastructure in areas with high worker populations.
The government also launched a Digital Labour Chowk App, which will serve as a single platform for accessing welfare schemes and job opportunities.
In addition, the state announced the extension of central social security schemes, including PM-SYM, PMJJBY, and PMSBY, with insurance premiums to be borne by the Board.
Officials said these measures are aimed at ensuring dignity of labour, stronger social security, and inclusive growth for construction workers and their families.
