Imphal: Manipur Police, with support from local organisations, including women’s groups, carried out coordinated drives against illicit distilled indigenous country liquor (DIC) across parts of the state, officials said on Sunday.
In one such operation, a large consignment of illegal liquor was seized and destroyed at Wanglee village in Kamjong district. According to sources, local women vigilante groups intercepted two vehicles transporting the contraband from Yairipok in Thoubal district around noon.
Approximately 700 litres of illicit liquor were recovered during the operation. The seized consignment was later burned. The identities of those involved in transporting the liquor were yet to be established at the time of reporting.
In a separate operation, Manipur Police arrested a 26-year-old man, identified as Chingakham Nilabir Singh of Andro Khunou Leikai in Imphal East district, at Mayang Imphal Thongkhong.
Police said around 270 litres of DIC liquor, along with 80 half-bottles amounting to an additional 40 litres, were seized from his possession. The accused, along with the confiscated liquor, has been handed over to the Excise Department for further action.
Officials said such drives are being intensified in vulnerable areas to curb the production, transport, and sale of illicit liquor.
