Guwahati: The National Institute of Technology Silchar has issued a directive prohibiting hostel boarders, mess workers and others associated with hostel facilities from conducting or participating in prayers or religious gatherings in open and common areas within the campus.

The order, issued by the Office of the Dean of Studentsโ€™ Welfare, came into effect immediately after approval from the competent authority, according to an official notification dated April 24.

The institute stated that no individual residing in or linked to hostel facilities shall organise or take part in prayer meetings, religious assemblies or similar activities in shared spaces inside hostels or elsewhere on campus.

It warned that any violation of the directive would be dealt with strictly and could attract disciplinary action.

Copies of the order have been circulated to the Director, Registrar, Associate Deans of Studentsโ€™ Welfare, wardens, assistant wardens, estate officials, housekeeping in-charges, mess caterers and students for compliance.

While the administration has not publicly elaborated on the reasons behind the move, the directive specifically applies to common-use and open spaces, without reference to private personal practices.

Located in Silchar, the institute is among the countryโ€™s centrally funded technical institutions and hosts a diverse student population from across India.
