Guwahati: The Manipur government has extended the shutdown of mobile internet, data services and VPN access in five districts for another two days due to security concerns.
An official notification stated that the curbs will continue in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur from 2 pm on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The decision was taken after assessing the current situation on the ground.
Earlier, authorities had stopped mobile data services in these districts for three days starting April 7 as a precaution during heightened tension. A day later, limited internet access through wired connections such as leased circuits and home fibre networks was allowed in a controlled manner.
In the fresh directive, the government said it cannot yet allow mobile internet as there are no strong systems to monitor and control its usage effectively. Officials also flagged concerns that platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and X may be used to circulate misleading content.
The order warned that such content could trigger gatherings or protests that may turn violent, resulting in incidents like property damage or unrest. It also noted that mass forwarding features could worsen the situation by spreading messages quickly.
The order has been enforced under Rule 3 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, with officials stating it was implemented immediately due to the situation, without prior notice.
Officials warned that legal action will be taken against anyone who breaks the order.
